Alberta Farm Fuel Benefit (AFFB)

Agriculture and Rural Development

Last Verified: 2009-07-06

Program designed to offer motor fuel to Alberta farmers at a rate competitive with farmers in other parts of North America.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the benefit, producers must:

  • be actively and directly farming by controlling farming assets and making the day to day management decisions
  • have annual farm production worth at least $10,000 or $5,000-$9,999, if the only other significant sources of income are Canada Pension Plan or Old Age Security.

Summary

The Alberta Farm Fuel Benefit was designed to offer motor fuel to Alberta farmers at a rate competitive with farmers in other parts of North America. It is made up of a fuel tax exemption and the Alberta Farm Fuel Distribution Allowance, which further reduces the cost of diesel fuel.

The tax exemption portion of the benefit allows farmers to purchase marked gasoline and diesel, exempt of the nine (9) cents per litre provincial fuel tax. The Alberta Farm Fuel Distribution Allowance (AFFDA) further reduces the cost of marked diesel by six (6) cents per litre. The current fuel tax on propane is six and one-half (6.5) cents per litre and propane used for farming purposes is exempt from this tax. This program has been in effect for many years, providing the tax exemption and AFFDA grant to eligible farmers.

Application forms are available from bulk fuel dealers.
