Alberta Ingenuity was established to develop internationally competitive science and engineering expertise in the province. Ingenuity is helping nurture the discovery of new knowledge and encourages its application to benefit Albertans.

Eligibility Criteria

All applications are evaluated using a rigorous peer-review system. Each application is assessed for quality by external experts and by review committees with representatives from Alberta and abroad.

Eligible Activities

Funding provided through Ingenuity’s grants and awards programs is used to:

  • Help Alberta universities, colleges and industry recruit new researchers
  • Provide start-up support (primarily operating funds) to new independent researchers at Alberta universities and colleges
  • Support students in their first year of graduate studies and new students coming to Alberta
  • Support groups of outstanding researchers from universities, colleges and industry, with interdisciplinary scope and vision, who work in areas of strategic importance to Alberta

Summary

Alberta Ingenuity offers the following grants and awards programs:

Industry Associates
Enables Alberta companies to recruit recent Master’s and Doctoral graduates to conduct research that benefits the company. An Alberta Ingenuity Industry Associateship may be held for two years and consists of a $48,000 annual stipend and a research allowance of up to $7,000 per year. Up to forty Industry Associateships will be awarded annually.

Centre Program Awards
Offers major grants to outstanding research groups at universities and colleges working in areas of strategic importance to Alberta.

Scholar Awards
Helps attract the world's best researchers and innovators in areas of strategic importance to the province. These researchers provide leadership and focus to Alberta’s research efforts, and help build additional research capacity.

New Faculty Awards
Provides start-up support – primarily operating funds – to independent investigators who are in their first academic career appointment at an Alberta university or college.

Fellowships
Helps post-secondary institutions recruit new researchers by providing an opportunity for science and engineering researchers with a PhD to obtain their first postdoctoral position and further their research experience.

Student Scholarships
Supports top students as they undertake full-time research training in a natural science or engineering discipline at an Alberta university leading to a research-based Master’s or Doctoral degree.

Bill Bridger Award of Excellence
Dr. Bill Bridger was Alberta Ingenuity's first President and CEO. When he retired in 2004, an annual Bill Bridger Award of Excellence was created to recognize his contribution. Each year, the award is given to an Ingenuity Student Scholarship recipient who demonstrates outstanding achievement.
