Alberta Science and Research Investments Program

The Alberta Science and Research Investments Program (ASRIP) is a competitive funding mechanism designed to support large research infrastructure requirements for multidisciplinary teams of researchers conducting excellent research, primarily in the strategic priority areas of energy, life sciences, nanotechnology, and information and communications technology (ICT).

The program is also a mechanism to leverage support from other sources such as the federal Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (CFI) and the private sector in order to maximize the research dollars flowing into Alberta.

Eligibility Criteria

The ASRIP strongly encourages the submission of proposals in the strategic priority areas of Energy, Life Sciences, Nanotechnology, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

This does not preclude the submission of proposals from other areas of research. However, priority will be given to applications in these four strategic areas. The intent of the ASRIP is to support excellence and innovation across the spectrum of research activities while ensuring a focus on Alberta’s strategic research areas of priority.

Further information on the strategic priority areas is available from the Alberta Science and Research Authority’s website.

The CFI's applicant eligibility guidelines apply to the ASRIP program, thus the competition is limited to institutions approved as CFI-eligible. In brief, an eligible institution is defined as:

• a university, hospital, or post-secondary college or educational institution that is situated in Alberta and has demonstrated its capability to support and conduct research;

• a not-for-profit organization or a trust, as long as they are not agencies of government or for-profit corporations; its activities are primarily carried out in Alberta, and it has demonstrated its capability to support and conduct research.

An eligible Alberta hospital is affiliated with an eligible institution (i.e. a university) and, as such, is included in its affiliated university’s institutional envelope (as allocated by the CFI). A hospital may submit an application as a lead, or its affiliated university may lead the application. In either case, the designated signatories of both the university and the hospital must sign the application to demonstrate that the project is complementary to the research missions of the hospital and its affiliated research institution.

Summary

The three main objectives of the ASRIP are:

    The ASRIP is an independent program that uses a cost-shared funding approach to provide up to 40% of the total eligible project costs for successful proposals, enabling projects to leverage support from the Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (CFI) and other sources. To facilitate this cost-shared approach, the ASRIP coordinates its competitive cycle with the CFI’s.

    The 2008-09 ASRIP competition is comprised of two funding streams that mirror the CFI’s New Initiatives Fund (NIF) and Leading Edge Fund (LEF) and that have distinct eligibility requirements:

    Leading edge activities that build on past investments that the ASRIP and/or CFI has made at the applicant institution. Specifically, these investments may be through the IF, the IJVF, the CRDF, the URDF, the LEF, or the NIF
    Promising innovative directions in research and technology development that do not build on past ASRIP or CFI investments at the institution. Specifically, this means that the project is not dependent upon the outcomes of previous projects funded at the institution through the ASRIP or the CFI’s Innovation Fund, the International Joint Venture Fund, the College Research Development Fund, or the University Research Development Fund.
