The Society promotes the wider use of appropriate alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes such as mediation and arbitration, and conducts training in these and other ADR subjects as part of its' Certificate Program in Conflict Management.

Summary

The Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society

 

  • is an independent not-for-profit association whose aim is "to promote, inform and educate the public on the application and scope of mediation, arbitration and similar processes for the effective resolution of disputes"
  • was founded in 1982; is the largest regional affiliate of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada, Inc. with over 700 members, the majority of whom are individual practitioners (arbitrators and mediators)
  • provides a province-wide referral service to the public for ADR services
  • offers province-wide, through various secondary and post-secondary institutions, the only Certificate Program in Conflict Management of its type available anywhere in North America, and is one of two "Certificate" programs available in Canada open to any interested person regardless of prior education or experience
  • offers custom courses to corporate and government clients for delivery on site
  • provides consultative services to organizations, including school boards, health boards and corporations, on dispute resolution / complaint resolution systems design
  • maintains a public education program on the benefits and availability of alternatives to litigation in resolving disputes
  • has developed and published course training materials in ADR and conflict resolution, together with an annual "Directory of Arbitrators and Mediators", available to anyone requesting it without charge
  • has developed Codes of Ethics for arbitrators and mediators, and rules for arbitration
  • is volunteer-driven, with a staff of 4.0 FTE operating from the Society's head office
  • through its wholly-owned subsidiary corporation, "Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc.", functions as Provincial Administrator for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan, Canada's first national consumer product arbitration program.
