Alberta International and Intergovernmental Relations maintains a presence in key international regions through a network of international offices, currently located in Asia, Europe and North America.
The department promotes the Alberta Advantage and markets Alberta internationally as a desirable location for investment or businesses, in addition to marketing Alberta's exports and company capabilities. This is accomplished by:
- Providing information to companies and individuals who may be interested in expanding or locating in Alberta
- Providing competitive intelligence, market information and knowledge to support companies in identifying and accessing marketing opportunities within target markets
- Facilitating business contacts
- Increasing awareness of Alberta and its companies' capabilities in targeted primary and secondary markets
Agriculture & Food
The Agriculture and Food Branch's mandate is to expand opportunities for and enhance the competitiveness of Alberta's agriculture and food products and services in international markets.
The Branch provides the Alberta agriculture and food industry with information and intelligence about emerging issues and trends in target markets that assists businesses with export market planning and decision making. The Branch also identifies and communicates market opportunities available to Alberta agri-food exporters, connects exporters to these opportunities and helps promote Alberta products and services in target markets.
The Agriculture & Food Branch works closely with key partners in both the government and private sector, and in particular with Alberta Agriculture and Food to provide services to industry clients.
Advanced Industries
The Advanced Industries Branch is responsible for facilitating the growth of Alberta exports within the following sectors:
The Advanced Industries Branch contributes to the long-term growth and diversification of the Alberta economy by providing relevant, practical and current information focused on increasing advanced industry exports to targeted global markets.
The branch has a full time staff of 13 divided into two teams focusing on:
- Asia Pacific - Target markets include: Japan, S. Korea and Greater China [Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan]
- North America and European Union - Target markets include: U.S., U.K., Germany & Netherlands
Advanced Industries representatives are located in both Edmonton and Calgary and work closely with representatives from Alberta International Offices.
Energy Industries & Services
The Energy Industries and Services Branch is divided into four units that support the priority sectors: Energy, Equipment and Services and Environmental Products and Services.
Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere trade teams:
Assist Alberta-based companies by providing market intelligence and identifying international business opportunities forAlberta firms in specific markets and sectors by establishing and maintaining an Alberta presence in priority markets through trade development and marketing programs. They also coordinate strategic inbound and outbound trade missions, facilitate networking events and programs, and contact introductions.
Showcase Alberta:
Supports market entry for Alberta exporters by showcasing Alberta both internationally and domestically by strategically participating in selected activities. These marketing initiatives are designed to improve market awareness and promote the capabilities, products and services of Alberta-based companies.
International Financial Institutions:
Are formal international lending agencies, operating across country boundaries, and play an integral role in the development of international activities for Alberta's private sector. The Alberta government provides Alberta companies with information on international financial institutions development projects to facilitate new export and investment opportunities.

International Trade Operations Branch
The International Trade Operations Branch is responsible for the overall administration of Alberta's international offices network, financial administration for the Division, strategy development, intergovernmental relations to trade and coordination of international missions.

Finance and International Office Liaison Unit
The Finance and International Office Liaison [FIOL] Unit is responsible for providing direct and on-going operational support to Alberta's International Offices to ensure their cost-effective operation.
Providing critical support to the nine international offices, duties of this unit entail the negotiation, on behalf of the Alberta government, with the government of Canada on matters related to Alberta's International Office co-location agreements and operational activities. FIOL is also responsible for areas that affect the entire International Offices and Trade Division.
Additional responsibilities include the establishment and monitoring of annual performance measures and targets for all International Offices as well as the coordination and management of budget forecasts and expenditures. FIOL is also accountable for the creation of the International Offices Activity Report, which outlines the mission, goals and services provided by Alberta's international offices.

Intergovernmental Business and Trade Relations Unit
The Intergovernmental Business and Trade Relations Unit markets the province, monitors Intergovernmental issues, and maintains relationships between Alberta International and Intergovernmental Relations and other governments, with a focus on business and trade relations and economic development activities. These may include province-to-province, federal-provincial, province-to-state, province-to-country, or department-to-department within the Government of Alberta.

Mission Planning & Coordination Unit
The Mission Planning & Coordination Unit provides support and direction relative to executive missions for Alberta International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations.
Executive missions are those that involve the Premier, Minister, Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Ministers of Alberta International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations. The Unit also provides advice to other government departments on executive mission planning and accountability.
Mission Planning and Coordination staff ensure government procedures are adhered to in the financial reporting of Alberta International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations ministerial missions as well as missions as well as missions involving Alberta's international offices who assist various ministries in their executive missions.
The unit is also responsible for the development, delivery and distribution of marketing and promotional initiatives for Alberta International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations marketing missions for departmental and other government executives. Coordination of marketing messages abroad and for use by partners and stakeholders is also managed by this unit.

Strategic Projects Unit
The Strategic Projects Unit leads, coordinates, or implements the development of departmental and cross-ministerial international strategies, initiatives, and projects that have broad implications for how IIAR and the Alberta government deliver services to Alberta business.
The Unit co-ordinates and develops departmental positions and actions with respect to Alberta's international economic development policy priorities, and specific responsibility for international trade policy. The Unit also analyzes, assesses and delivers strategic projects generated from sources within and outside the International Offices and Trade division.
The Unit is responsible for the development and implementation of international marketing and business intelligence initiatives. In particular, the Unit is responsible for the development of the Alberta's International Marketing Strategy: a comprehensive guide to Alberta's priorities in individual industry sectors and specific geographic markets.
